Testing Artificial Intelligence With ‘SnotBot’ Drones

Computer scientists at Intel Labs and neuroscientists at Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PNI) are collaborating to explore how insights gained from studies of human behavior and the human brain can be applied to artificial intelligence and the design of more effective autonomous agents.  

Specifically, they are seeking to apply insights into how the brain handles the tradeoff between learning and generalization (supported by “controlled processing) and efficient multitasking (supported by “automatic processing”) can be used to design drones that can more effectively learn about and adapt to complex changing environments.  

As a testbed for their ideas, they are using “SnotBots” — drones used to track and collect samples from the “blow” of whales to study their behavior and physiology. 

Recently, the Intel team conducted a demonstration of the existing drones for the PNI scientists at West Windsor Fields on the Princeton University campus.
