Firm Aims to Rid the World of Land Mines—With Drones

A Dutch company has developed a novel way to find and detonate land mines without risk to humans. The airborne de-mining system, called Mine Kafon Drone, uses drones outfitted with robotic extensions to map, detect and detonate hidden mines.

Drones use an areal 3D mapping system to locate mines and place timed detonators over the area. Its inventors claim the system can clear mines 20 times faster than current methods.

Land mines kill 15-20,000 people around the globe each year, according to a 2008 UN report.
